Heaven’s Beat
He’s walking a beat in heaven With a new partner to help him on, Up before the first light of morning With a sad smile greeting the new dawn. His badge glows bright with glory His boots are still shiny black, For there’s not much dust in heaven Except for some stardust on his hat. There’s not much to do For a cop in blue On heavens lonely beat. Dry a little one’s tears Soothe away some fears Or just walk the golden streets. Heaven can be A sad place to be For a cop who fell too soon. Walking this lonely beat Among the sun’s fading heat He smiles sadly at the rising new moon. Once in a while A stray tear will fall, Even though heaven’s not supposed to have any pain, Thinking about the wife He left behind His arms ache to hold her just once again. He’s walking a beat in heaven With others who felt the fall, Brothers to one another Their names proudly on the wall.
