I Wonder
I wonder how they will tell her That I won’t be coming home anymore, I wonder if she will stand there bravely Or fall onto the floor? Will she silently wipe the tears Flowing down her face? Will she gaze at the table where I sat Noticing the empty place? Will she fold and put away My uniform with loving care, Tucked away in a cardboard box Next to my old teddy bear? Will she bravely take the flag From my place of rest, Gazing at the marble stone Bearing my family crest? Will she stand and nod As my brothers march by, While my partner holds her hand Struggling not to cry? Will she mount my badge High upon the wall, Next to my smiling face In my department’s hall? Will she gently hold my boy Wiping the tears that he cries, As he wonders aloud to God Why his daddy didn’t say goodbye?
