Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Daddy quietly watches her As he stands near the doorway, He smiles into her eyes As she prepares for her wedding day. She now needed something borrowed, And something blue, Something old, Her ring would be something new. She looked at daddy’s old badge As a tear escaped her eye, Daddy whispered in her ear, Sweet sweet girl, please don’t cry. Wiping the tears On her face, She gently polishes his badge With her wedding veil’s lace. Daddy’s borrowed badge was old But she still needed something blue, She looked at daddy’s police hat, Thinking proudly that this will do. She removed her wedding veil Setting it aside, Upon her long hair She placed daddy’s blue hat with pride. Daddy straightens his old hat With his gentle hand. Startled, she unknowingly looks, Into the eyes of this man. They say she has her daddy’s eyes, And his smile too, But she can’t recall the man, Who died proudly for the blue. She used to lie awake, Waiting for a good night kiss that came no more, She would finally fall into a dreamless sleep, Still hoping to hear his footsteps outside her door. Now daddy’s face Reflects his pride, Unseen by his girl, He walks near her side.
